New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Pomona began as a mission church planted in October 1979 by a large independent fellowship in the Pomona Valley. The church was both founded and organized by the late Reverend Walter Cooks, Jr. on October 14, 1979. Reverend Cooks served as pastor for the church and services were held at the Cooks' home located at 687 S Reservoir Street in the City of Pomona, California. It wasn't until December 6, 1979 that Sister Mable Boyd suggested that the name of the church be "New Hope Missionary Baptist Church."
Reverend Cooks and the members saw the need to seek guidance and assistance from the Southern Baptist Convention and in 1979 the church became affiliated with the Calvary-Arrowhead Southern Baptist Association in Riverside, California. On December 30, 1979, the Home Mission Board of Southern Baptist Convention assisted New Hope Missionary Baptist Church with the purchase of its church building located at 1567 South Reservoir Street in the City of Pomona, California. As initial congregation grew by the 1980s to nearly a hundred members the Board of Directors along with the membership believed it would be in the interest of the chruch to incorporate. On November 10, 1980 the church was incorporated under the new name, "New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Pomona."
On March 2, 2006 celebrated its mortgage burn commemorating the pay off of the church's property mortgage. In that same year, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Pomona ended it long-lasting relationship with the California Southern Baptist Convention.
On August 28, 2012 and after 32 years of pastoral service, the Reverend Walter Cooks Jr. went on to be with the Lord. We are greatful for his vision in fulfilling a great legacy for the church. After an exhaustive pastoral search, the members of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Pomona selected Reverend Dr. Curtis L. Hughes Sr. in February 2014 to become the next sitting pastor for the church. And on March 1, 2014, Dr. Hughes was installed as the pastor for New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Pomona.
In recent years, as a result of a fervent desire to see growth, both spirituality and numerically, the church members have created new strategies to become more involved in supporting our church and the surrounding community. There has been gradual redevelopment within the church that have helped identify and address the needs of the church, our membership and the community.
